Protecting our planet
Climate
We are targeting a 40% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, and net-zero across all scopes by 2050. Our decarbonisation strategy focuses on reducing emissions from heat and electricity, backed by a clear transition plan.
Since 2020, we’ve invested €140 million in Scope 1 initiatives, cutting 150,000 tons of CO₂ annually. For Scope 2, we’ve achieved a 75% annual reduction by sourcing 100% renewable electricity in Austria and Germany through Guarantees of Origin and virtual Power Purchase Agreements.
These efforts have helped to reduce our corporate carbon footprint by 19%, with Scope 1 and 2 emissions now making up just 32% of the total—down from 45% in 2020.
By 2030, we plan to invest €300 million in energy efficiency and decarbonisation projects. We’re also launching a supplier engagement programme to tackle Scope 3 emissions, focusing on corn and key chemical inputs.
Water
We are committed to reducing water withdrawal and consumption wherever possible, with a clear focus on efficiency and environmental care.
We target to maintain systematic compliance of treated wastewater returned to the environment with the strict regulations of our countries of operation.
Water use efficiency and recycling projects completed since 2022 have generated close to 1,000,000 m3/y total water savings.
Looking ahead, we’re targeting a 10% improvement in water efficiency by 2030 as part of our ongoing efforts to preserve natural resources and operate responsibly.
Biodiversity
We are committed to protecting and enhancing biodiversity across our entire value chain.
As part of this, we’ve helped develop a sector-specific biodiversity check tailored for the chemical industry—strengthening industry-wide awareness and action.
We ensure zero deforestation in our supply chains and aim to work closely with partners to integrate and measure sustainable farming practices within our corn sourcing.
Circularity
Our business model is intrinsically circular. We transform corn into safe, biodegradable ingredients for everyday use through natural processes like fermentation.
We continuously optimise production to minimise waste—creating valuable by-products used in animal nutrition, agriculture, construction, and biogas generation.
Today, nearly all of our products and by-products contain 100% biogenic carbon.
Each year, we generate over 100 GWh of biogas from wastewater streams, and we’re working towards eliminating landfill disposal of specific waste streams through innovative technologies in our production processes.
