Introduction
CITROCOAT® EP is an agglomerated effervescent compound, bringing citric acid and sodium bicarbonate together in the right composition to create a highly reactive but storage-stable effervescent powder with a target pH of 5.5. Due to the excess acidity, a rapid effervescent reaction is to be expected, and the slightly acidic pH value ensures a fresh flavour. In order to prevent premature reactions, the citric acid used in CITROCOAT® EP is coated with a thin layer of monosodium citrate. The two effervescent components are agglomerated using a binder, reducing the potential for segregation and improving compressibility. This leads to significantly harder tablets than with a formula based on regular citric acid and sodium bicarbonate.

Legal aspects
In Europe, all ingredients are listed as generally permitted food additives (E330, E331, E500, E414) and may be added to all foodstuffs, following the ‘quantum satis’ principle as long as no special regulation restricts the use.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has affirmed citric acid and sodium bicarbonate as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and permitted the use in food according to current GMP (21 CFR § 184.1033 and 184.1736), without setting an upper limit. Monosodium citrate is self-affirmed GRAS within the meaning of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and may be used in food and beverages in full compliance with the applicable FDA regulations. In addition, the FDA has affirmed gum arabic (acacia) as a food additive permitted for direct addition to food for human consumption (21 CFR § 172.695) according to current GMP with upper limits for specific applications.
In Europe, Jungbunzlauer CITROCOAT® EP is compliant with Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products as well as Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/1410 amending Annexes II and III to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/831 amending Annexes II, III and V to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. According Commission Decision (EU) 2019/701 the ingredients of CITROCOAT® EP are listed in the glossary of common ingredient names for use in the labelling of cosmetic products and has to be labelled as following: SODIUM BICARBONATE (22873), CITRIC ACID (5637), ACACIA SENEGAL GUM (650) and MONOSODIUM CITRATE (14801).
In the United States, there are no legal restrictions to use CITROCOAT® EP in personal care products.
The REACH registration number of Jungbunzlauer citric acid is 01-2119457026-42-0000, for sodium bicarbonate 01-2119457606-32 and for monosodium citrate 01-2119457585-28-0000. Gum arabic is exempted from REACH by means of Commission Regulation (EC) No. 987/2008 of 8 October 2008 (amending Annex IV).
