Introduction

Citric acid DC is a directly compressible citric acid with a thin layer of maltodextrin on the surface of the particles. The use of citric acid DC results in time energy savings during the pre-processing or granulation steps prior to the tableting process.

It also provides greater tablet hardness at a lower compression force than it is the case with regular citric acid, thus allowing the friability of pressed tablets during packaging and transport to be reduced.

Legal aspects

In Europe, citric acid anhydrous is listed as generally permitted food additive (E330) and may be added to all foodstuffs, following the ‘quantum satis’ principle as long as no special regulation restricts the use. Maltodextrin is not regulated as a food additive but is generally referred to as starch hydrolysates.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has affirmed citric acid as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and permitted the use in food according to current GMP (21CFR § 184.1033), without setting an upper limit. The FDA has affirmed maltodextrin as GRAS and permitted the use in food according to current GMP (21CFR § 184.1444), without setting an upper limit.

In Europe, Jungbunzlauer citric acid DC is compliant with Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 on cosmetic products as well as Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/1410 amending Annexes II and III to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/831 amending Annexes II, III and V to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. According Commission Decision (EU) 2019/701 the ingredients of citric acid DC are listed in the glossary of common ingredient names for use in the labelling of cosmetic products and has to be labelled as following: CITRIC ACID (5637) and MALTODEXTRIN (13855).

In the United States, there are no legal restrictions to use citric acid DC in personal care products.
