CITROCOAT® EP is an agglomerated effervescent compound, bringing citric acid and sodium bicarbonate together in the right composition to create a highly reactive but storage-stable effervescent powder. In order to prevent premature reactions, the citric acid used is coated with a thin layer of monosodium citrate. The agglomeration links both components with an additional binder, reduces the potential for segregation in the final formulation and improves compressibility. This leads to significantly harder tablets compared with a formula based on a regular mixture of citric acid and sodium bicarbonate.
CITROCOAT® EP occurs as white granular crystals or fine crystalline powder. Specification is available on request.
CITROCOAT® N is supplied in 20 kg multilayer paper bags.
- Ready-to-use effervescent compound
- Highly reactive effervescent agglomerates

In Europe, all ingredients are listed as generally permitted food additives (E 330, E331, E 500, E 414) and may be added to all foodstuffs, following the “quantum satis“ principle as long as no special regulation restricts the use.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has affirmed citric acid and sodium bicarbonate as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) and permitted the use in food according to current GMP (21 CFR § 184.1033 and 184.1736), without setting an upper limit. Monosodium citrate is self-affirmed GRAS within the meaning of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and may be used in food and beverages in full compliance with the applicable FDA regulations. In addition, the FDA has affirmed gum arabic (acacia) as a food additive permitted for direct addition to food for human consumption (21 CFR § 172.695) according to current GMP with upper limits for specific applications.
