Start up of heat pumps for a big leap forward in emissions reduction
Sustainability is a keystone of Jungbunzlauer’s strategy and value proposition. It plays an important role in Jungbunzlauer’s supply chain, from the raw materials we source to the products we manufacture to shipping and customer deliveries.
Jungbunzlauer made major investments to achieve its long-term goal to be climate neutral by 2050. As one of the bigger emission reduction projects to lower the carbon footprint in Jungbunzlauer’s plant in Pernhofen, Austria, two industrial, large-scale heat pumps have been successfully installed. How does this work?
The heat pumps repurpose excess heat from production processes and elevate the temperature level such that, the use of steam for other processes is reduced significantly. In order to optimise the utilisation rate, a large heat storage tank was installed along with a heat distribution net. With this project Jungbunzlauer can reduce output by 34.000 t CO2e per year.
This is not the end of this journey. Jungbunzlauer will further invest into this technology by adding a third heat pump to further increase annual emission reduction.
