Our Sustainability Approach
From nature to ingredients®
Since the foundation of the company the use of fermentation as core competence is the base of Jungbunzlauer’s success story. It lies in the nature of our business to be sustainable in the way we produce. In 2013, we strengthened this approach with the public announcement of our new mission “From nature to ingredients®”.
Core Competence
Jungbunzlauer’s core competence is the production of additives by fermentation from renewable sources (such as carbohydrates from corn). Fermentation itself is a naturally occurring process, which puts sustainability at the heart of our organisation.

Sustainability: a Keystone of Jungbunzlauer's Strategy
As fermentation is our core competence and the base of Jungbunzlauer’s success story, it lies in the nature of our business to be sustainable in the way we produce. In 2013, we strengthened this approach with the public announcement of our new mission “From nature to ingredients®”, committing us to the protection of people and the environment, on which our business operations have a direct influence.
Jungbunzlauer developed its mission statement in accordance with its sustainability vision as we want to do our part to preserve the environment we live and operate in.
Throughout Jungbunzlauer’s history, the company has sought to make sustainability a keystone of its strategy and value proposition and has successfully developed and adapted to the requirements of a continuously changing economic and social environment.
To ensure high standards in social, economic and environmental sustainability we choose business partners that support our vision. We and all our operations are dedicated to sustainability and to bettering the society, the environment and the economy.

Jungbunzlauer Employees
In total, Jungbunzlauer employs around 1300 employees worldwide. The majority of Jungbunzlauer employees are based in Europe, due to the fact that three of our four production sites are located there. Between 2020 and 2021 the number of employees grew by 6.4%.
Sustainability in our Supply Chain
Sustainability plays an important role in our supply chain, from the raw materials we source to the products we manufacture.
Back integration of our raw material production (glucose syrup) makes our supply chain more sustainable by reducing transportation and minimising energy use for production, which increases the proximity to our raw material suppliers. Direct sourcing of corn and contracts with regional farmers also enhance transparency regarding product quality.
Apart from that, by-products from our production processes are generally used in construction, agriculture or feed industry, as well as for biogas manufacturing which makes our production even more sustainable.

Committed to highest Quality and Safety
In order to meet the high quality and safety standards we have set for ourselves, Jungbunzlauer has established a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) programme for all lines used in the manufacturing of food grade additives or ingredients in all production sites. This meets the requirements of the seven Codex principles (Codex Alimentarius 1997).
To demonstrate the efficiency of our food safety systems, all our production plants are certified according to the requirements and guidelines of FSSC 22000 as well as ISO 9001. Adherence to these management systems is audited regularly.
The “Health, Safety and Environmental Policy” of the Jungbunzlauer Group has been issued as a guideline for the management of internal affiliated companies. It is the responsibility of the management of the subsidiaries to ensure the implementation of this policy, adapted to local circumstances. Our “Health, Safety and Environmental Policy” is available to our customers on our jbl4u platform as well as for interested parties on our homepage.
Stakeholder Engagement
Our stakeholders are affected by our business activities and, in turn, affect our own activities. This definition was taken into account when identifying our relevant stakeholder groups. By acting in accordance with our values and working towards our goals, we earn the trust of our shareholders, customers, business partners, co-workers, suppliers, employees and the communities where we live and work.

We need to rebalance our activities towards a more sustainable development - and Jungbunzlauer is more than ever committed to do its part.
