Magnesium Lactate
General information
Magnesium lactate dihydrate is produced by complete neutralisation of lactic acid with a high purity magnesium source and subsequent crystallisation. Magnesium lactate is mainly used as mineral source in food and beverages, food supplements, foods for particular nutritional purposes, and pharmaceutical preparations. Due to its neutral taste and high solubility, it is the magnesium salt of choice for mineral fortified liquid applications. As an organic mineral, it is preferred over inorganic sources because of its superior bioavailability and physiological compatibility.
Magnesium lactate is supplied as a white or almost white crystalline powder. It has a neutral taste, is practically odourless and has a good solubility in water (84 g/l).

Legal aspects
In Europe, magnesium lactate is allowed in food supplements (Directive 2002/46/EC) and in foods for particular nutritional uses (Directive 2001/15/EC). In addition to existing national allowances in some countries, magnesium lactate is on the positive list of the new Regulation (EC) No. 1925/2006 on food fortification.
It is listed as mineral salt in the EU Directive (EC) No. 2006/125 on foods for infants and young children.
In the Codex Alimentarius magnesium lactate is listed as food additive and additive permitted for use in food in general, unless otherwise specified, in accordance with GMP.
