Jungbunzlauer welcomes the European approval of erythritol for beverage use

On October 13th the European Commission published the long awaited approval of erythritol as flavour enhancer in beverages. This approval is the result of the positive EFSA opinion earlier this year on the safety of erythritol at use levels up to 1.6% and it opens new opportunities in the field of energy reduced and "with no added sugars" flavoured drinks. The flavour enhancing properties of the fermentation based zero calorie bulk sweetener erythritol (E968) are useful to significantly improve the taste profile of beverages sweetened with traditional artificial sweeteners or plant derived steviol glycosides. Also approaches based on sugar plus high intensity sweetener can profit greatly from erythritol. Jungbunzlauer welcomes this approval as the whole sensory profile of flavoured drinks can be improved in terms of flavour development, mouthfeel, acid sweetness balance and off taste. This will increase the acceptance of healthy drink concepts amongst the European consumer and facilitate the development of alternatives to sugary drinks.
