Anti-plaque effect of zinc citrate

With consumers worried about many oral health issues, high performance and multi-functionality have become key success factors for oral care products. One ingredient with increasing popularity in toothpaste and mouthwash is zinc citrate.

Zinc citrate has manifold functionalities in oral care products; it expresses anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effects and clinical studies have shown its ability to reduce or inhibit the formation of dental plaque and tartar and its positive effects on gingivitis. Additionally, zinc controls bad breath by both its anti-microbial action and by the neutralisation of volatile sulphur compounds responsible for malodour.

In a recent in vitro study the anti-plaque effect of Jungbunzlauer’s zinc citrate was confirmed via the novel CellZscope® technology and even the lowest tested concentration of 0.5 % solubilised zinc citrate resulted in an inhibition of biofilm formation by S. mutans lasting 48h. CellZscope® is an automated device for measuring the transepithelial/-endothelial impedance of cell layers or in particular bacterial biofilm layers under physiological conditions.
