Legal Aspects

Erythritol is safe under conditions of its intended use. This is substantiated by human and animal safety studies.

The European Union has approved it in 2006 and in February 2008 at the latest the approval will be adopted into national law, thus making it free for use in all European countries. The UK has adopted the European approval as well.

In the US, Erythritol was affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) in 1997.

In Japan erythritol is approved since 1990 and is considered a zero calorie food.

Erythritol is also approved in Canada, Australia/New Zealand, Russia and many Asiatic/Pacific countries.
