Erythritol – a novel low-calorie bulk sweetener

Erythritol is Jungbunzlauer’s healthy sweetening alternative. Reducing sugar for purposes of a balanced energy intake or controlling the glycemic load of our diet has become a main focus in today’s nutrition. However, in pursuing such a goal the preservation of the food’s original taste profile has the highest priority, since this is important for the customer’s product acceptance.

Jungbunzlauer’s Erythritol is an ingredient that supports both main criteria: It is a low-calorie bulk sweetener offering an attractive reduction of carbohydrate energy in products and at the same time its taste profile is basically like sugar. Depending on the application Erythritol has a sweetness level of 60 – 80% compared to sugar. Erythritol does not contribute to the glycemic load of foods and thus is an easy-to-use ingredient also in Type II diabetic diets. The use of Erythritol has proven to lead to low-calorie fully flavoured products in a large range of foods, such as ice creams, confectionary, beverages, bakery or in dairy products.

Further main benefits are natural status, high digestive tolerance, no cariogenicity and thus tooth friendliness.

As a single sweetener or in blends with other sweeteners, where it reveals very interesting synergies, Erythritol plays a leading role in modern sugar reduction.
