New GRAS status for Trimagnesium Citrates

Ladenburg, October 6, 2006 In September 2006, an independent scientific panel concluded that Jungbunzlauer’s magnesium salts trimagnesium citrate anhydrous as well as trimagnesium citrate nonahydrate are “generally recognized as safe” (self-affirmed GRAS) in full compliance with the US Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

So far in the USA, trimagnesium citrates were used as magnesium source in dietary supplements and pharmaceutical preparations only. With the new GRAS status, trimagnesium citrates can now also be used for the fortification of food and beverages.

Human studies have shown that trimagnesium citrates are among the best absorbable magnesium salts. Additionally, trimagnesium citrates are the perfect fit for food and beverages due to their high magnesium content (16 and 12 %), neutral taste as well as their high solubility. Trimagnesium citrate anhydrous displays the highest solubility among the organic magnesium salts.

Besides calcium (bone health, anti-obesity effect) and potassium (heart health) the mineral magnesium is getting increasing attention in the functional foods and supplements industry. Several human studies have highlighted the beneficial effect of this important mineral on muscle functionality, bone health, hypertension, inflammation, asthma, headaches and even diabetes.

According to a U.S. food consumption survey covering the two-year period from 1994-1996, the vast majority of the population falls short of their magnesium requirements. The average daily intake of magnesium from food for adult women was found to be approx. 235 mg and for adult men approx. 325 mg, which is equivalent to only 59% and 81% of the current US RDA of 400 mg.
