Jungbunzlauer launched new generation of gypsum set retarders

Jungbunzlauer has strengthened its expertise in the field of industrial applications and launched the product line GLUCOSET. The new generation of gypsum set retarders enables constructors and plasterers to replace or blend usual and costly set retarders.

(L)-Tartaric acid has been used for a long time and is considered as the gold standard in the construction industry. As the material is derived from extraction of natural grapes or, alternatively, through a sophisticated chemical synthesis, tartaric acid is expensive and shows strong price fluctuations.
In cooperation with leading gypsum experts from the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany, Jungbunzlauer completed a screening of gluconate-based set retarders for gypsum plaster formulations. The R&D programme comprised various laboratory experiments, including the Vicat method and ultrasonic velocity tests as well as in-use wall tests.
The results demonstrated that gluconate-based set retarders can replace (L)-tartaric acid. Even though they must be formulated in a higher concentration (w/w), the total price for the set retarder will be substantially lower. By combining tartaric acid and gluconates (blends) a further beneficial synergy between the two organic acids can be observed.

These findings have led to the development of the following portfolio of set retarders, launched under the trade name GLUCOSET:

The results of the laboratory experiments have been published in an article (download now!) and were presented at the Ibausil Conference in Weimar in September 2015.

We are pleased to meet you at the Global Gypsum Conference which will be held 25 - 26 October 2015 in New Orleans. Don't miss our presentation 'Set retarders for gypsum spray plaster based on gluconates – lab and applications test results regarding the replacement of (L)-tartaric acid' on Monday, 26 October!
